Rail Symposium

Released on January 30, 2001

The Canada Transportation Act Review Panel was established on July 1, 2000, to conduct a comprehensive review of the Canada Transportation Act and related legislation, and is presently working toward the presentation of its final report to the Minister of Transport by July 1, 2001. On December 31, 2000, the Panel presented its interim report (pdf) (txt) to the Minister on the issue of competitive rail access, which was then made public by the Minister early in the new year. This report provides a framework and key criteria for evaluating proposals to enhance competitive rail access and identifies key issues requiring resolution to move the debate on rail access forward. On January 19th, the Panel also released another document, "Issues Under Consideration (pdf) (txt)," outlining all of the issues under its consideration in addition to competitive rail access.

To build on the Interim Report, IRPP will facilitate a two-day Symposium on Rail Issues. The purpose of this Symposium is to review rail access proposals within the framework set out in the Interim Report as well as other issues that the Panel has been requested to consider and that are important to the future of rail transportation in Canada.

The Rail Symposium will be held at the Fairmont Winnipeg (formerly The Lombard) on February 26 and 27, 2001.  Interested parties can view the proposed preliminary program (pdf) (txt) which details registration (pdf) (txt) and accommodation.
